Saddleworth Personal Trainer Exercising

What is a Split Squat?

The Split Squat is a single leg exercise that is excellent for building strength, stability & flexibility.

Variations

The Split Squat is a very versatile exercise and can be performed with or without addition weight. The Split Squat has 3 main variations;

  • Front Foot Elevated (FFE)
  • Flat
  • Rear Foot Elevated (RFE)

I have listed the movements in order of difficulty (easiest to hardest).

“Bang for your Buck”

The Key benefits of a Split Squat;

  • Improves ankle dorsiflexion (flexibility)
  • Increases ankle, hip & knee stability
  • Strengthens the quadricep, glute & calf muscles

This one exercise has benefits that range from improving your Barbell Squat performance to helping you be more stable on your feet & at a lower risk of falling. For this reason I believe this exercise should be included in every training program, no matter what the goal.
